Clinical Study of Partial Atrioventricular Canal Defect

Abstract
Six patients received postoperative cardiac catheterization and angiogram among the nine patients treated for a partial atrioventricular canal defect between February 1984 and October 1986 have been reviewed.
The mean age of patients was 12.5 years with a range of 5 to 21 years, and three of patients were male and three were female.
There was no operative or hospital death. All patients showed residual left atrioventricular insufficiency ranging from Sellers grade I to grade N on the postoperative cardiac angiogram with positive relationship with the degree of preoperative atrioventricular insufficiency and pulmonary arterial pressure.
This result was inferior than other reports for the residual atrioventricular insufficiency.
All residual atrioventricular insufficiencies reviewed were thought caused by slow dehiscence of sutured atrioventricular valvular cleft, and one case was combined with the deficiency of atrioventricular valvular tissue.
In repairing a partial atrioventricular canal defect, I thought that pledget supported or deep and closely spaced sutures should be used.
